On a roof somewhere in a city destroyed by war, Ferhat waits for the return of his great love Sherin. She has gone to the front to fight, and so he must stay – he refuses to flee from the escalating violence. Filmmaker and publicist Beri Shalmashi returned to the city of Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan to shoot the short film Shouted from the Rooftops. “I wrote the first version of the screenplay when the war in Syria was just starting, I was just living in Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan, and just across the border there was a lot going on. A revolution turned into a mess, citizens taking up arms, Kurdish girls defending their city."
